Dear Church Family,

Every Sunday for over two thousand years Christians around the world gathered to worship our Risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May we likewise bow before His Holy Presence today.

Scripture Reading

Psalm 93

The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty;

The Lord is clothed,

He has girded Himself with strength.

Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved.

Your throne is established from of old;

You are from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord,

The floods have lifted up their voice;

The floods lift up their waves.

The Lord on high is mightier

Than the noise of many waters,

Than the mighty waves of the sea.

Your testimonies are very sure;

Holiness adorns Your house,

O Lord, forever.

Truth Making a Difference.

As we find ourselves in the middle of this Fourth of July weekend some might be asking, why all the bother? Why all the patriotism?  Here is something to read or listen to that will help us answer these questions from a practical and biblical perspective.

Tomorrow is July 4th — Independence Day in the United States. A big day of celebration for us here. Every year it raises questions for Christians about nationalism and what’s a healthy level of patriotism. Matt, a podcast listener, writes in to ask this: “Pastor John, hello! Obviously, as Christians we are to live as strangers, exiles, aliens, and pilgrims on this earth. Is there an appropriate place in the Christian life to be patriotic? If so, what is it? And at what point does our patriotism go too far?”

Yes, I think there is, and I think it’s right, or at least it can be right and good. It is true, and we need to stress it at the beginning and maybe stress it at the end: We are pilgrims here. We are exiles, refugees, sojourners. Peter says, “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul” (1 Peter 2:11). Paul says, “Our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20). That’s number one. That’s foundational. That’s relativizing to all human allegiances.

Citizen of Heaven, Exile on Earth

So, the question is framed rightly: we are citizens of heaven; we are sojourners and pilgrims on the earth, but that’s owing to the fact that the world is fallen, not to the fact that the world is created. We are going to spend eternity in a created world — in fact, this created world renewed and cleansed. But Satan won’t be the god of that world anymore like the New Testament says he is now (2 Corinthians 4:4).

That’s what makes us feel so alien here: the god of this world is Satan. He holds such extensive sway. The world is permeated with sin. It makes us feel like we’re not at home‚ and we’re not, in a very real sense, while that kind of sinfulness permeates the world. We are just aching to be done with sin, mainly our sin, not just the grossness and godlessness that we see in the world. We long to be holy and to be in the presence of Holiness himself.

So, when I say we are aliens and exiles and sojourners and pilgrims, I don’t mean that the earth itself or everything in it is despised. I mean that the structures we find ourselves in — this rebellious body of John Piper, family, work, education, entertainment, politics, media, even church, all of it — are so permeated with sin that we long for something new and clean and pure and holy and Christ-exalting.

However, God means for us to be enmeshed in this world. We’re “not of the world,” Jesus says in John 17:16, but we are in the world, and we are supposed to be in it (John 17:18). I just read in my devotions yesterday 2 Corinthians 10:3: “Though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.” That’s just another way of saying, “in the world, but not of the world.”

Love for the Fatherland

We may be in a city, a state, a country, and if I ask, “What is patriotism in this enmeshment?” my answer is that patriotism is a kind of love for fatherland — and I mean fatherland in a very general sense. It could be a city (Minneapolis), or a state (Minnesota), or a country (US, Brazil, China, Nigeria), or a tribe (Ojibwe, Navajo, Fulani, Kachin). And that love for these enmeshments, these belongings, is different from the general love that Christians have for everybody or for the whole earth.

The reason I think it’s good to have special affections for these particular attachments is that the Bible seems to point in that direction in several ways. For example, Paul says in Galatians 6:10, “As we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” So, it’s as though there is this specialness about those who are close to you and like you. There is a kind of affection for them that’s different.

Or consider 1 Timothy 5:8: “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” So, it seems like it’s right not just to have a general love spread over the whole world for people, as if everybody will receive from us exactly the same affections. But rather, there is a specialness, a peculiarity, about the affections for certain affinity groups — not at the expense of others, but even for the sake of others.

Paul seems to point in this direction in Romans 9:3 when he says, “I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh.” What’s that? There’s something about this “kinship according to the flesh.” He means Jewishness. It’s being bound together in a family way or a cultural way with a group that makes him have a special affection and longing for them that’s different from the love he has for everybody.

Affection for What Fits

As I was thinking about this, C.S. Lewis gave me some help, because in his book The Four Loves — which, by the way, Tony, 45 minutes ago I realized I’ve got this book on file in my computer in the voice of C.S. Lewis himself. I went there and listened to this section about 45 minutes ago. I’ve got Lewis talking in my mind about storgē. Okay, I wasn’t going to say that, but I did that this morning, and I’m so excited that I’ve been listening to C.S. Lewis in his own voice!

But anyway, he wrote this book The Four Loves, and he distinguishes philia, friendship; erōs, sex; agapē, the love of God; and the one that I think is relevant right here: storgē.

Now, storgē is a kind of affection. It’s what you feel for a pair of slippers that your wife thinks you should have thrown away a long time ago, but they fit just right; they feel just right. Storgē is the affection that a child feels for an old raggedy doll that everybody looks at and says, “That’s good for nothing.” Well, no, it’s really good for that child; that child has a very special affection for that doll.

Or I can think of a sweater. I just tossed a ten-year-old sweater away the other day, and I took a picture of it, sent it to my kids, and I put a text on it: “Rest in peace.” I should’ve said, “Rest in pieces” because it was so torn up and Noël was saying, “You don’t need to wear that anymore.” I said, “Well, I just like it.” So, it’s the sweater, it’s the tree where you carved your initials as a couple at Wheaton College (and they took that tree down, the rascals, just a few years ago). You love to be near that tree. That tree means more than other trees. Or it’s the lagoon where Noël and I were engaged. That’s a real special place that we can go back to.

Created for Culture

So, there is a kind of affection for a tree, a sweater, a city, a language, a culture, a fatherland. Why? Because it fits you. When you leave it, get on a plane to go to another country, there may be excitement and challenge and stimulation, and you get real worked up with new cultures. They might even be superior in some ways to your own culture. In other words, we’re not talking here, when we talk about special love for your own family or ethnicity or city or state or fatherland, about superiority and inferiority here anymore than your love for your husband or your wife is because they’re the smartest or the handsomest person in the world. That’s not what’s going on here. That’s not the point in this special kind of affection that we’re talking about.

The point is this: when you come home from those travels, even from so-called “superior” cultures, the fatherland fits like the slippers fit or the sweater or the smells or the sound; it’s just full of good associations, like the tree where you carved your initials.

So, it seems to me that this is good, and that the goodness is implied in the Bible, and God created us to be in skin, in languages, in families, in cultures. He doesn’t mean for us to despise our skin or our language or our culture, but rather to be at home in them, and to feel good about them — of course, we have to add — up to a point. They’re all sinful, and so we never give them absolute allegiance. We never cease to be exiles and sojourners, even in our families and tribes and ethnicities — indeed, in our own bodies.

Bound Together for Good

Now, Romans 13 seems to me to take this point of the special affection to the level of countries when it says that a state has the right to use the sword to maintain order and to defend itself against aggression. When it says that, it seems to me to be saying, in effect, that this fatherland has the right to exist. And if it has the right to exist, it would seem that the people who live there can be glad that it exists. They can say, “We’re glad that this fatherland exists. We like it here.”

They can say that without putting down other nations or cultures. You don’t have to be negative about another country because you love your own. That’s a lesson, by the way, we need to learn today at every level. In fact, I would argue that in globally connected nations, like we have today — this interdependent world of ours — you probably will fail to love your country if you fail to work for the good of other countries as well; we’re just too interdependent for that not to be true.

Now, let me end on this note for Christians especially: never feel — never feel— more attached to your fatherland or your tribe or your family or your ethnicity than you do to the people of Christ. Everyone who is in Christ is more closely and permanently united to others in Christ, no matter the other associations, than we are to our nearest fellow citizen or party member or brother or sister or spouse. Oh, how many horrible indignities, injustices, contradictions of Christianity have been perpetrated because believers have failed to realize this: we are more bound together with other believers — no matter their ethnicity or their political alignments or their nationality — than we are to anybody in our own fatherland.

In the end, Christ has relativized all human allegiances, all human loves. Keeping Christ supreme in our affections makes all our lesser loves better, not worse. Under his flag, it is right to be thankful to God that we have a fatherland, a tribe, a family, an old pair of slippers that just fit right.

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear Church Family,

Another week has passed and it was God, His sustaining grace, His Word, and His faithfulness that enabled and moved us forward. Yes, there were trials and tribulations but through it all we can be assured that  God is faithful to His beloved children. My prayer is that the Lord Jesus Christ and His Word will continually be your light, life and delight.

By His Grace,

Pastor Steve

 Psalm 119:90-92

Your faithfulness endures to all generations; You established the earth, and it abides.They continue this day according to Your ordinances, For all are Your servants. Unless Your law had been my delight, I would then have perished in my affliction.

Scripture Reading

Colossians 3

1  If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2  Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4  When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

5  Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6  Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7  in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.

8  But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9  Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10  and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11  where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.

12  Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13  bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14  But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15  And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17  And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

18  Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19  Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. 20  Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. 21  Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. 22  Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. 23  And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24  knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. 25  But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality.

Truth Always Matters

You may ask, how is it possible to bring glory to God? Colossians chapter three helps us with this question.

1 Corinthians 10:31

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God”

~~~
Colossians 3:16-17
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
June 21, 2020
Good morning!
When we gathered on Wednesday our study in Romans 4 brought us to the doctrine of imputation. I mention I would expand this great truth in the Sunday morning sermon. In these reflections as well, the wonderful truth of Christ taking our sin and giving “us” the believer, His righteousness is appreciated. We stand in awe of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. God Bless you on this Lord’s Day. Pastor Steve
The Power of the Cross
Prayer
Scripture Reading
1John 4: 7-19
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.
Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.
Ministering Truth
Gathering together is wonderful and we hope to very soon, but that is a very small part of our weekly time and lives. The majority of our time is spent at work and functioning around our homes and neighborhoods. Certainly we want to meet soon and we will.
Our Sunday gatherings are purposed supremely for giving honor and thanksgiving to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We come together with repentant and confessing hearts to worship. We gather not to “worship” worship or feel good about ourselves or gain merit to try to appease God, but to adore Him and humbly honor Him with like minded believers.
Our worship does have an object and motive. That object and motive is not ourselves, other people, personal gain, finding a spouse, or being thought well of by our peers. We gather to give, not necessarily to receive. The object of our worship is the Lord Jesus Christ and our motive is to praise His holy name.
As we sing His truth, we honor Him.
As we pray, we recognize our dependence on Him as our Protector and Provider.
As we sit under the teaching and preaching of God’s Word the Bible we worship Him, we desire to more fully know, love and serve Him.
As we come to the communion table, the Lord’s Supper, we are blessed and worship our Savior as we remember His death as the payment for our sin. We remember His great mercy and grace upon our sinful lives and giving us a new life and relationship with Him. We remember His resurrection declaring His victory over death and His glorious Second Coming.
Connected with all this, and not a part of the previous truths, is the godly connection and fellowship we have with fellow believers. The fellowship we share is in a real sense a ministering of the supernatural. God the Holy Spirit indwells believers.
1 Corinthians 3:16  Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
Ephesians 1:13 Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise.
God, upon salvation gives gifts,  abilities to each believer to use for the building up of one another.
1Peter 4:10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God
*See Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4. Do note, God gave temporary sign gifts during the apostolic age until the Bible was completed and permanent edifying gifts for the duration of His church.
So in a real sense as we minister to one another, God is working in and through us. God has determined in a certain capacity to do His work among us and through us by His grace.
You are a very important part of God’s plan as the body of Christ.  Allow God to use you in the church and in the world. You are desperately needed. In fact, that is why you are still alive. As soon as you trusted Christ as Lord and Savior He could have swooped you right into heaven. But he did not. You are still living on His blue planet to extend His love and His saving gospel message to the lost. We say quite often, this person needs God. They need His help, encouragement, kindness and teaching. Well look no further, God desires to work through you and use you to meet those needs.
Remember we are different people with different personalities, and as believers have different God given spiritual gifts. Please use them in the church and outside of the church. God’s people and the world need to see the love and heart of God. Allow God to be seen through you. / Pastor Steve
Video
Surely we side with God’s Word regarding sin and sinful lifestyles, but do not confuse that with different personalities, interests, occupations, and giftedness. As true believers we must try to understand one another and collectively use our giftedness for the good of one another and God’s ultimate glory. This video depicts that challenge.
~~~

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 3:20-21

Here are some good resources for the week.

Below is a list of verses that encourage us to surely focus on God and then on others for their good and God’s glory. Take time to go through the list of one anothers and be that one” to that “other” displaying the goodness of the Lord.

The “One Another” Passages

The phrase "one another" is derived from the Greek word allelon which means "one another, each other; mutually, reciprocally." It occurs 100 times in the New Testament. Approximately 59 of those occurrences are specific commands teaching us how (and how not) to relate to one another. Obedience to those commands is imperative. It forms the basis for all true Christian community, and has a direct impact on our witness to the world (John 13:35). In addition to allelon, the Bible uses other words and phrases to instruct us how to relate to others. With that in mind, the following list is not exhaustive, and primarily focuses on the use of allelon.

POSITIVE COMMANDS

Love one another (John 13:34 - This command occurs at least 16 times)

Be devoted to one another (Romans 12:10)

Honor one another above yourselves (Romans 12:10)

Live in harmony with one another (Romans 12:16)

Build up one another (Romans 14:19; 1 Thessalonians 5:11)

Be likeminded towards one another (Romans 15:5)

Accept one another (Romans 15:7)

Admonish one another (Romans 15:14; Colossians 3:16) Greet one another (Romans 16:16) Care for one another (1 Corinthians 12:25)

Serve one another (Galatians 5:13)

Bear one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2)

Forgive one another (Ephesians 4:2, 32; Colossians 3:13)

Be patient with one another (Ephesians 4:2; Colossians 3:13)

Speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15, 25)

Be kind and compassionate to one another (Ephesians 4:32)

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19)

Submit to one another (Ephesians 5:21, 1 Peter 5:5)

Consider others better than yourselves (Philippians 2:3)

Look to the interests of one another (Philippians 2:4)

Bear with one another (Colossians 3:13)

Teach one another (Colossians 3:16)

Comfort one another (1 Thessalonians 4:18)

Encourage one another (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

Exhort one another (Hebrews 3:13)

Stir up [provoke, stimulate] one another to love and good works (Hebrews 10:24)

Show hospitality to one another (1 Peter 4:9)

Employ the gifts that God has given us for the benefit of one another (1 Peter 4:10)

Clothe yourselves with humility towards one another (1 Peter 5:5)

Pray for one another (James 5:16)

Confess your faults to one another (James 5:16)

NEGATIVE COMMANDS (how not to treat one another)

Do not lie to one another (Colossians 3:9) Stop passing judgment on one another (Romans 14:13) If you keep on biting and devouring each other...you'll be destroyed by each other (Galatians 5:15) Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other (Galatians 5:26) Do not slander one another (James 4:11) Don't grumble against each other (James 5:9)

We do all this because we are in a real sense “members of one another” (Romans 12:5; Ephesians 4:25). (Selected article)

New Every Morning

In Acts 27 we see the Apostle Paul living his life in an ungodly, tough sinful, unbelieving world. Paul’s world was full of war, corrupt governments, power hunger, lust, hatred, greed, prejudice, selfishness, poverty, disease, slavery, pride, deceit and idolatry. How did this man of God survive in a world much like ours today? Seeing him in Acts chapter 27 will help with that question.

Ask yourself a few questions about the narrative in Acts 27 and you will understand more about your God, your circumstances and your life. When this happens the truth will set you free as it did the Apostle Paul.

  • Was Paul called by God unto salvation? Yes.

  • Was Paul a godly man? Yes.

  • Was Paul called to serve God? Yes.

  • Was Paul in the center of God’s will? Yes.

  • Did the world listen to Paul in verse eleven? No

  • Was Paul afraid to confront the men on the ship who did not listen to him? No.

  • Was Paul concerned for their lives? Yes.

  • Was Paul trusting in the promises of God for his life and well being? Yes.

  • Did Paul believe he could prematurely die? No.

  • Did Paul believe his life was in the hands of men? No.

  • Did Paul believe his life was in the hands of God? Yes.

  • Did Paul believe God was sovereign? Yes.

  • Did Paul believe in the providence of God? Yes

  • Did Paul have enemies, misunderstood, experience hardship, pain, suffering, loss, and fatigue? Yes.

  • Did Paul question or think as a child of God he should not experience this trauma? No.

  • Did Paul lose his focus on God and the purpose of his life? No.

  • Did Paul believe that God would or could forsake him? No.

  • Did Paul lose faith and truth in Jesus because of the shipwreck? No.

  • Was Paul shaking his fist at God in bitter anger saying, “God why me?” No.

2 Corinthians 11:23-28

...in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness—besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches.

In Romans 8:18 Paul says,

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

  • Did Paul believe what God inspired him to write in Romans 8:28? Yes.

    “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

  • If you know Christ as Lord and Savior is Paul’s God your God? Yes.

Trust Him!

Good morning.

I do hope you are well this Lord’s Day morning. O how we need the divine food from the throne of God today and every day to keep us stable in a world of instability. He is the anchor for our souls. He restores our souls. He prepares a table before us in the presence of our enemies. And one day, we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 105:1-4

Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples! Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works! Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord! Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore!

Mark 4:35-41

Mark 4:35-41

On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace,be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

In the Eye  of the Storm

A Word from Pastor Steve

My hope for you and your family is to allow God to draw you closer to Himself. The more we see Him the more we love Him, and the more we love Him the more we trust Him. This is a continued motion going in the right direction. The more we trust Him the  more our fears, worries, and lack of faith dissipate.

In Mark chapter 4 we see again the mighty power of God.

This was a very long day for Jesus and His disciples. In fact, it started back in chapter 3 verse 20. To escape the crowds and seek a time of rest they set out to cross the sea of Galilee. They crossed not in the smaller rowing boats of the day but the larger fishing vessels, according to the word recorded.

They were going for rest. But there was to be a trial before that rest.

As we note verse 35 Jesus says to His disciples, “Let us cross over to the other side.” On the authority of Jesus’ words they will make it to the other side!

Then it happens. As the very exhausted Jesus is asleep in the back of the boat, a killer storm erupts. In verse 38 these seasoned fishermen know this storm is going to drown them. Then the cry in verse 38,“Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Matthew 8:25 says, Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”

Mark verse 35 is worth noting again. “Let us cross over to the other side.”Jesus did not say, let us go down to the sea and be drowned.

Have you ever asked the question in 4:38? God, don’t you care? God, can’t you see what is going on? Like the disciples, when the waves crash over our lives do we question the Lord’s concern?  Do we question His sovereignty over all circumstances?

In verse 39 Jesus brings clarity to all fears and doubts. “Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”

“Peace” literally, be silent was the address to the howling winds.  “Be still” Be muzzled! Psalm 89:9 “You rule the raging of the sea, when it’s waves rise you still them. “

In verses 40 Jesus now addresses His disciples. “But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” They did not yet realized the great fact that the kingdom was present in the person and work of Jesus.

Now in verse 41 we see a different kind of fear than the kind invoked by the storm.

“They feared exceedingly.” This was a deep reverential awe in the presence of the supernatural. This should be our daily attitude towards God.

Some Teaching to Ponder and Apply.

This life threatening trial brought them closer to the reality of the Savior.

It increased their faith to trust Him more. And it gave them a greater boldness to serve Him. The next time you find yourself tossed by the storms of life and are tempted to say, “Master don’t you care that we perish?” Remember that Jesus, if you have trusted Him as Lord and Savior, is in your boat.

Cast aside any doubt regarding either God’s concern for you or His ability to effectively act upon that concern.  And remember the promise (the certainty) when life here is coming to an end - that just as Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross over to the other side.” He says with certainty to us in John 14:2-3, “I go and prepare a place for you. I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.”

~~~
Hebrews 13:20-21
Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
~~~

May I encourage you this week to read or listen to the four gospels. Allow them to flow into your heart and soul and experience the power and wonder of the Lord Jesus Christ. See His mighty hand healing the sick, commanding nature and most of all providing forgiveness of sin by His death and resurrection. Doing this will humble you as you see Jesus not as the world depicts Him but as He really is. If you know Him your faith will grow, if not my prayer is that you would turn from your sin and come to Him as did Thomas believing and saying, My Lord and My God.

Dear beloved in Christ,

Good morning!

I am thankful that for now our lives and hearts can be knit together in this way. It is encouraging that though we are not together we can connect and be blessed with the same biblical truths, prayers and songs. We are looking forward to meeting again very soon. God bless you and your family on this Lord’s Day.

Scripture Reading to read or to listen. Luke 7:11-17

11 Soon afterward[a] he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. 12 As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus[b] gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!” 17 And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.

O My Soul

Truth for Today

Stand in awe of the power of God! From the creation of the universe to sustaining all things the power of God is displayed.

Life is ordained by God. He gives life and in His great wisdom and power ends life. To make sure we do not think He does not have control of life,death, time and eternity He commands the dead man of Luke chapter seven to rise from the dead. His power is beyond our comprehension.

Death is final for all humanity unless God says otherwise. The body goes into the grave, decays and turns to dust unless God says otherwise. And to be sure, God does say otherwise.

The power of Christ is earth shaking. He shakes the earth and He shakes us to the very core causing us to come unraveled by His power and blazing glory. We are shocked by what we see happening in Luke chapter seven. True miracles are shocking. There is no human explanation for a dead man being raised to life again.

Oh how some wish they could know and see God. For those who so desire, behold His glory in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, Emmanuel,  Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23, “God with us.”

See the compassion of our great God on the mourning widow mother in raising her son. See this magnitude of unprecedented power being displayed to the multitude. God was revealing Himself for all to see. Do you see Him? Will you trust Him for the days ahead? He promises that you too will rise by His power from the dead. Fear not!

Eternal life is promised to all but not all have the same destination. Jesus said , Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out. “John 5:28. In Matthew 25:46 Jesus says some “will go away into everlasting punishment , but the righteous into eternal life.”

Those who are declared righteous  through faith, trust alone in the Lord Jesus Christ will be raised to eternal life to the glories of heaven with their Savior. Those who reject God’s forgiveness in Christ alone will go into everlasting punishment.

May Jesus cause your soul to live by His power and give you forgiveness through faith alone in Him.

~~~
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
1 Peter 5:10-11
I know some of us have seen and heard the following video but let me encourage you to be renewed again with the great reality of Jesus Christ and His great salvation. In light of the past few months we are reminded again and forced to think of our mortality. Yes, life is short. There are no guarantees for tomorrow. Let us not forget even if we are healed from disease, come through a pandemic, recover from an accident, we will all die. Where will you spend eternity? Are you forgiven of your sins? The answer is found in the person and work of Christ.
Scripture Reading Psalm 66
Truth for Today / Hebrews 2:14
I am reminded again of reality of the truth found in Philippians 1:19-26
19“For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. 24 Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25 And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith, 26 that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.”
The song writer in the hymn “In Christ Alone” says this...
No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the power of Christ in me From life's first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No power of hell, no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from His hand Till He returns or calls me home Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.
My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,
Fear Not. Why? Psalm 23 says, for Thou art with me. This is the reality in life and in death.
Fear Not. Why? Jesus said because I live you will live also.  John 14:19.
Fear Not. Why? To die is gain. Philippians 1:21
Fear Not. Why? To be with Christ is far better. Philippians 1:23
Living in fear takes the life out of our living. Likewise living in fear takes Christ, who is our life out of our living.  If He is replaced with fear our Christian life is crippled. Do not allow any circumstance, good or bad replace Christ and His power in your life. We really have only two choices in the virus fear of today. Let fear rule your life or rest in the promises of God and let Christ rule your life. Let fear be magnified or let Christ be magnified. How foolish to know Christ and live as though He doesn’t exist. He Lives! Let it be said of us as in Philippians 1:20...according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.
Song
May God be magnified in all of our lives this week. God bless you.
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and
glory forever and ever. Amen.
Reflections for Good Friday April 10, 2020
Dear faithful beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today is the day that the Christian Church calls Good Friday. It was the day that the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified and paid for the sin of all who turn from their sin and by faith trust Him alone as Lord and Savior.  We have a precious Savior!
Ephesians 2:1-9
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Though we are not together this Good Friday may our hearts be knit together in the magnitude of the power, love, forgiveness, mercy and grace of our wonderful Savior. Let us bow before the cross,worshiping Him with all of our hearts.
I do hope that you take some time today allowing the following scriptures and song to draw you closer to the Lord. Just scroll down and open them in order.
